Epic Universe: My Honest Thoughts, Favorites & Must-Know Tips Before You Go
Stepping into Universal’s Epic Universe feels a little like walking through the pages of your childhood imagination except someone added thrill rides, fire whiskey, and the best mac and cheese cone I’ve ever had. It’s not just a theme park; it’s five fully immersive worlds woven together with detail, storytelling, and just enough unexpected details to keep things exciting.
I recently got the chance to Preview Epic Universe before it opened to the public. I spent time exploring all five lands of Epic Universe Celestial Park, Isle of Berk, The Wizarding World’s Ministry of Magic, Dark Universe, and Super Nintendo World and I left with a full heart (and plans already to go back). Here’s everything I loved, what I wish had gone differently, and a few tips to help you make the most of your visit.
Celestial Park: Stunning Day or Night, But Don’t Miss the Carousel After Dark
Celestial Park – The Heart of the Universe
This is your entry point and the central hub that connects all other lands. Celestial Park feels like stepping into a dreamy, cosmic garden. Think tranquil water features, tree lined landscaping (Which once grown will give more shade), and glowing elements that come to life at night.
Don’t Miss:
- Constellation Carousel – A whimsical ride that glows beautifully after sunset.
- Stardust Racers – A thrilling dual-launch coaster that zips through the park.
- Dining – The park’s signature full-service restaurant and grab-and-go spots are located here, offering a break from the action.
Celestial Park is equal parts relaxing and jaw-dropping, setting the tone for the immersive adventure ahead. At night, the carousel is the crown jewel. It’s whimsical and radiant definitely one of those “take the photo, stay for the ride” moments. There’s something really peaceful about this area that gives you a chance to slow down between the thrills.

Pizza Moon: A Celestial Bite in Celestial Park
We ate lunch at Pizza Moon and if you are looking for something unique to eat in Epic Universe, don’t miss Pizza Moon in Celestial Park. This whimsical, space-themed pizzeria serves up imaginative dishes with a cosmic twist including the popular Pizza Lunare: a 12-inch pie with roasted garlic béchamel, pancetta, ricotta, garlic confit, and a striking purple ube crust. It’s rich, savory, and totally Instagram-worthy. Bonus: You can mobile order and have your food delivered right to your table easy and delicious!

Ministry of Magic: The Queue Is Worth It (Even If the Ride Isn’t Running)
This section blends 1920 Parisian wizardry (inspired by Fantastic Beasts) with the classic British Ministry of Magic, creating a totally new magical environment. The architecture is ornate and transportive, and the theming carries through down to the floor tiles. It is stunning.
Highlights:
- Battle of the Ministry Ride – An innovative dark ride experience… when it’s working. It’s had reliability issues, but you can still walk through the incredible queue even if the ride is down.
- Café L’Air de la Sirène – French-inspired eats and drinks, like the Bièraubeurre Crêpe and fire whiskey.
- Drinks Worth Trying: Frozen Butterbeer + Fire Whiskey combo = chef’s kiss.
- Live Show – Le Cirque Arcanus performance brings life to the mysterious traveling circus from Fantastic Beasts.
Even if you’re not a die-hard Potterhead, this land is visually stunning and incredibly immersive.
Let’s talk about the elephant in the room: the Battle of the Ministry ride went down more than once during our visit, and unfortunately, I didn’t get to ride it. BUT, here’s the silver lining, you can still walk through the queue, and honestly? It was incredible. The attention to detail, the immersive storytelling, the way you feel like you’ve actually stepped into the Wizarding World… worth the walk-through alone.
Eats & Drinks to Try
Some of our group ate at Café L’Air de la Sirène and ended up being a surprisingly great place to take a break with delicious food. Highly recommend the frozen Butterbeer (still a classic!) but I still cant decided if I like frozen better…too hard to choose. If you’re feeling bold head to Bar Moonshine for a cocktail or try the Fire Whisky. Yes, it’s strong but if there were ever a place to try it, this is it.

Isle of Berk: My Favorite Land (And the Mac & Cheese Cone That Lives in My Dreams)
This land stole my heart. Maybe it was the sweeping views of dragon houses on the hills or the way it felt like a hidden Viking village tucked into the cliffs—but Isle of Berk was pure magic. My favorite ride here was Hiccup’s Wing Gliders smooth, scenic, and so much fun.
You enter through a Viking-style portal into the land of dragons, cliffs, and charm. Isle of Berk is themed after the beloved How to Train Your Dragon franchise, and the attention to detail is next-level from carved dragon statues to sweeping coastal views.
And then there’s the food. If you eat nothing else in the park, please promise me you’ll try The Dragon Fire Chicken Spire at Hooligan’s Grog & Gruel (the famous mac and cheese cones). I am still thinking about it. We also caught the live show featuring dragon trainers and acrobatics, and it was such a joyful touch great for kids and adults alike.
Top Experiences:
- Hiccup’s Wing Gliders – A flying coaster that soars over the land with smooth, scenic fun.
- Live Show – A dynamic performance with acrobatics, dragon trainers, and plenty of wow moments. It’s heartfelt and you may even shed a tear or two!
- Food Must-Try: The Dragon Fire Chicek Spire (Hot Honey Chicken Mac & Cheese Cone)
Perfect for families and fans of the films, this land feels like stepping into a moving storybook.

Dark Universe: Spooky, Stunning, and alive
Spooky, cinematic, and surprisingly thrilling Dark Universe brings Universal’s classic monsters (like Frankenstein, Dracula, and The Wolfman) into the modern age with jaw-dropping effects and atmospheric storytelling.
Can’t-Miss Ride:
- Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment – An intense dark ride with major tech and scares. Not ideal for younger kids or those prone to motion sickness, but amazing for thrill seekers.
- Curse of the Werewolf was down while we were visiting the park.
Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment was one of the most intense rides we tried. The technology? Incredible. The scares? Pretty solid. If you get motion sick, be warned this one’s got a few spins and turns that might leave you dizzy. And for younger kids (like my 6-year-old), it might be a bit too intense. But for the thrill seekers, the kids and teens that love a good scare? It’s a hit.
Gloomy, gothic, and rich with lore. At night, the portal glows with eerie light and feels straight out of a classic horror movie set. This land brings all the monster movie vibes in the best way. The entry portal alone is jaw-dropping. Unfortunately we didn’t get to spend much time in this portal but I am looking forward to going back to this spot at night!

Super Nintendo World: For Every 80s Kid’s Inner Gamer
Pure nostalgia wrapped in bright colors, familiar tunes, and interactive fun. This land brings Mario, Donkey Kong, and friends to life with incredible theming and hands-on gameplay. They didn’t just build a land, they built a feeling!
Fan Favorites:
- Donkey Kong: Mine Cart Madness – A fast-paced, innovative coaster with jaw-dropping track effects.
- Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge – A unique AR ride experience. Rainbow Road had me going back to console racing against siblings!
- Power-Up Bands – Collect digital coins, play mini-games, and explore secret challenges throughout the land. (You can definitely enjoy the portal without the bands too!)
The music, sounds, and visuals feel like stepping into your childhood gaming console especially magical for 80s and 90s kids. They didn’t leave a single detail out, and I felt like I had stepped inside my old Nintendo console.
My favorite ride here was Donkey Kong Mine Cart Madness. It’s fast, it’s fun, and the track illusion is wild. A must-do. Even if you’re not big on gaming, the theming alone makes this land worth a stroll. And yes, the Power-Up Bands are fun, especially if you want to turn your visit into an interactive scavenger hunt.

Express Pass at Epic Universe: What to Know
Yes, Express Pass is available at Epic Universe but it doesn’t work quite the same way across every ride. Not every attraction honors Express, Dragon Racer’s Rally, Mine Cart Madness and the Battle of the Ministry are not included. However, If you’re planning to visit during a busy season or only have one day in the park, I’d definitely recommend it. It saved us serious time, especially for high-demand rides like Monsters Unchained and Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge.
Pro tip: Keep an eye on the Universal app wait times, Express eligibility, and ride closures update in real time, which was a lifesaver when Ministry of Magic went down (again).
Final Thoughts: Should You Visit Epic Universe?
Absolutely. There’s still some tech and ride reliability to work out especially at Ministry of Magic but overall, it’s an incredible park. It feels new and fresh while still deeply nostalgic and immersive. I’d go back in a heartbeat.
Just pack your patience (and maybe some Dramamine), and go in with a mix of strategy and flexibility. The park is has so much to explore, so plan to spend at least a full day and if you can swing it, two.
