24 Hours in San Francisco: Oysters, Streetcars, and Swoon-Worthy Views
San Francisco has always been one of those cities I’ve wanted to explore more than just in passing—and we finally made it happen with a quick day-and-a-half getaway that packed in all the charm, character, and carbs you could want.
Where we stayed.
We stayed right in the heart of it all at Hotel Zelos, a chic little spot in SoMa that was perfect for walking to nearby shops and catching the streetcar when our legs gave out. It had a modern vibe, cozy rooms, and a lobby that felt like a secret retreat in the middle of the city.

Foodie Finds & Waterfront Wandering
We kicked things off with lunch at The Grove, a casual and cozy café that felt like a cross between a rustic cabin and a hip coffee shop. It was the perfect spot to recharge before heading out to explore.

From there, we made our way to Fisherman’s Wharf and Pier 39. Yes, it’s touristy—but sometimes you lean into that. We watched the sea lions do their thing, popped into a few shops, and took in those classic Bay views.

Later in the afternoon, we wandered through the Ferry Building Marketplace, which was such a treat. This is where you can find the Famous melted cheese that they melt right off the block onto different items. Get there early, it sells out quick!

I could have spent hours browsing local artisan stalls—chocolates, cheeses, soaps, you name it. But we made a beeline for Hog Island Oyster Co., and it did not disappoint. There was already a line out the door (always a good sign), and it was well worth the wait. Fresh oysters, chilled wine, and a table by the window overlooking the Bay? Absolute perfection.
Dinner by Streetcar & A Little Old-School Magic
That evening, we hopped on one of San Francisco’s iconic streetcars, riding through the hills with the wind in our hair and city lights starting to glow around us. It dropped us off right near our dinner spot—Trattoria Contadina at 1800 Mason Street.
This little neighborhood gem has been serving homemade Italian for decades, and it felt like stepping into someone’s family kitchen. The pasta was incredible, the vibe was warm and welcoming, and it was the kind of meal that invites you to linger a little longer over your glass of wine. Cozy, flavorful, and full of charm—this was a highlight of our trip.

A Quick Farewell
Before heading out the next morning, we grabbed a coffee and soaked in a few more sights. Even with just a short visit, San Francisco has a way of making you feel like you’ve experienced something special.
It was a quick stay because we had other plans to make our way up to Sonoma, see the Muir Woods and then check out the Peteluma Butter & Egg Festival during this weekend visit!

Bonus Tip: Want to See More in Less Time?
If you’re visiting San Francisco for the first time or are tight on time, the Hop-On, Hop-Off Bus Tour is a great way to cover a lot of ground. We did it on a previous trip and loved how easy it made sightseeing. From the Golden Gate Bridge to Painted Ladies, Lombard Street, and everything in between—you get all the highlights without having to plan it all out yourself. Plus, the views from the top deck are worth it.
San Francisco gave us so many postcard-worthy moments and incredible meals. Whether you’re there for a weekend or just passing through, it’s a city that leaves its mark (and makes you want to come back for more).
Let me know if you’re planning a trip—I’d love to help you map it all out so you can just show up and enjoy!
